U.S. Outlook: Bank lending makes a comeback

With great happiness I can say that the latest signs show banks are becoming more eager to lend to consumers and businesses.

Graph showing demand for credit [1]The improvement in lending conditions is an encouraging sign for the economy in the quarters ahead.

Key observations:
  • Banks say outlook for prime and sub-prime credit card loan growth is better than last year.
  • March consumer credit jump was the biggest monthly increase since February 2013.
  • Credit demand is growing for commercial and industrial, commercial real estate, auto and credit card loans.
  • Tighter mortgage standards and weaker demand may be temporary.
