In times of market turmoil, it’s easy to get bearish on the economic outlook. But in reality, market forces often work in cross purposes on the economy.

Graph showing upward trend in small business optimismLook closely and you’ll see plenty of optimistic signs.

Below are highlights of my weekly economic analysis, followed by a link to the full U.S. Outlook report, delivered on Dec. 12.

Key observations:
  • A stronger dollar could have a tax-break-like impact for consumers.
  • New mortgage options from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac could grease the wheels for a housing market re-acceleration.
  • Declining oil and energy prices in the U.S. are still a net positive story.
  • Recent good news for the U.S. consumer is also great news for small businesses.
