U.S. Outlook: A part-time economy? Not exactly.

Scott Anderson
Chief Economist

There’s been some talk about the quality of jobs being created in this recovery — namely, that most of them are part-time jobs.

Graph showing how part-time employment has been declining. But the evidence doesn’t support such a theory.

For more on this and other economic developments to watch, see higlighhts of my weekly economic analysis below, followed by a link to the full U.S. Outlook report, delivered on June 13, 2014.

Key observations:
  • Part-time employment as a share of total employment has fallen rapidly to 18.7% from peak of 19.5% in July 2013.
  • As the recovery gains pace, full-time positions are replacing part-time jobs.
  • Quality job creation during this expansion appears to be improving rapidly.
