Are you still using your password from 2013?

I’ve been reading about the Yahoo! data breach of a billion accounts reported recently, which dates back to 2013. If you’re a Yahoo! user, I hope you’re not using the same password as you did in 2013.

Here’s a reminder for some best practices that will work right now and through 2017 – so how about making these your New Year’s resolutions?

  • Periodically change your passwords.
  • Do not reuse passwords.
  • Enable two-factor authentication to add an extra layer of security to your online accounts.
  • Use strong passwords. Password managers such as LastPass can make this much simpler.
  • Always use a password manager that offers two-factor authentication.

Here are two more New Year’s resolutions to add to your list:

  • Clean out your email by deleting old messages that are no longer needed. You’d be surprised; your sent items may go back more than 10 years!
  • Make sure your contact information (phone numbers/email/address) is up to date. If a company has a breach, you want them to be able to contact you.

If you own a business, here are few more recommendations to consider:

  • Archive old data and accounts – delete data and accounts when no longer needed because the data can cause problems later. It’s unlikely that all of the 1 billion Yahoo! accounts were being actively used.
  • Have a plan for security events. Your business could be the victim of a breach.
